YouTube Portraits

A portrait may traditionally be thought of as a very personal and revealing pursuit, capturing a moment of honesty for others to observe and absorb.  YouTube’s “video response” feature can be thought of as a type of personal portrait that users create of themselves. This feature allows users to post a utilitarian and conversational reaction to previously posted videos, revealing opinions and thoughts for millions to view. By taking a single snapshot of the responses and creating large prints of these moments, I have created a juxtaposition between modern communication and classic portraiture.

The portraits were rendered via a Processing sketch, adding a painterly effect both the portrait and the YouTube housing and player controls.
